Filoni Talks 'Ahsoka' Season Two And Mortis Gods

Star Wars fans can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel after three years of waiting for Ahsoka Season 2. The show returns in January, and Empire offers a sneak peek at what fans can expect in the highly anticipated second season.
Season 1 brought Ahsoka back from the dead and, in many ways, set her free. This season, all her beliefs will be put to the test as Dave Filoni tries to bring the Mortis Gods to live-action. The concept of the Mortis Gods was first introduced in The Clone Wars 3-episode arc where Ahsoka nearly died, but was saved by The Daughter and Anakin Skywalker. Fans often questioned what that meant for Ahsoka’s future - questions Filoni will try to answer, but it won’t be easy. For one, anyone who hasn’t seen The Clone Wars might think The Father, The Son, and The Daughter are deities Filoni created. However, they were actually conceptualized by George Lucas when he worked on The Clone Wars with Filoni. Filoni confirmed to Empire Magazine that in Season 2, the Gods are “definitely a thing.”

Filoni admits, “It was so surprising when George created these archetype god characters. What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it's a natural story path to get into these questions.” Are the Gods real, or are they symbolic of the true meaning of the Force? Ahsoka Tano will have to answer these questions for herself. After she spent decades post- Order 66 running from her Jedi upbringing, whatever happens in Season 2 will force Ahsoka to choose an identity. Is she a Jedi, or is she neutral, and can she afford to remain neutral? Filoni asks, “What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not? And what is the danger if it’s real? And how are you going to prioritise your goals here?” The Mortis arc was one of the most fascinating aspects of The Clone Wars, and even though Ahsoka Season 1 brought the World Between Worlds to live-action, Filoni admits that integrating elements from animation into greater Star Wars storytelling is challenging: “It’s a challenge, I can tell you.” Ahsoka Season 2, starring Rosario Dawson, Hayden Christensen, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and Eman Esfandi, will arrive on Disney+ in January 2027.
