Director Shawn Levy took to Instagram to share a first look at the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter. The picture showed Ryan Gosling and newcomer Flynn Gray standing in front of a sea in battered clothes. The caption read, “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea,” and was tagged in Sardinia, Italy. Lucasfilm is still keeping plot details under wraps, but the new movie is set five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Directing a Star Wars film is a dream made real for Levy. He explained, “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. ‘Star Wars’ shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever,” Levy said. “To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

While the post only features Gosling and Gray, the cast includes Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings with Jonathan Tropper penning the script. Levy and Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film. Star Wars: Starfighter lands in theaters on May 28, 2027, nearly a year after the next Star Wars project The Mandalorian & Grogu, releasing in May 2026.
