During an interview with Penguin Random House, George R.R. Martin revealed news that Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for. No, The Winds of Winter isn’t complete, but it is confirmed that this is going to be one massive book. At present, the manuscript is at 1,200 pages penned, with around 450 pages still waiting to be written.
“It’s a big, big book, I’ve said that before,” Martin stated during the interview. “It’s a challenging book. It’s probably gonna be a larger book than any of the previous volumes in the series.” Indeed, the current number of pages makes it larger than both A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons, the previous largest within the A Song of Ice and Fire series. The Winds of Winter could grow even larger if Martin can solve the challenge that he’s dubbed the Meereenese Knot.
The location of Meereen is where a whole lot of action will take place in The Winds of Winter, with many characters currently at or travelling to Meereen. All of those characters, such as Tyrion Lannister and Quentyn Martell, have their own goals and story arcs that need to converge with the storyline of Daenerys Targaryen. As Martin says, “Some of the point-of-view characters’ chapters are already finished, but I still need to interweave their narratives to create one cohesive plot.”
While it will be quite some time before The Winds of Winter is finished, fans now have a good idea of just what Martin has been doing for the past 14 years. When he’s not busy with the various TV projects, that is. A few parts of which will be integrated into the plot of the book.
