The Magic: The Gathering movie has found its director. Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment have reportedly pegged Matt Johnson to lead the upcoming screen adaptation of the legendary card game.

Johnson is best known for the 2023 docu-drama BlackBerry, which won him Best Director in a Canadian Film at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle. Before BlackBerry, Johnson helped create and starred in the comedy series Nirvanna the Band the Show and the 2016 film Operation Avalanche.

While Johnson’s previous work has garnered a decent amount of attention and praise, MTG would be his biggest project yet. In 2022, Magic: The Gathering became Hasbro’s first $1 billion property, so the film has a massive reputation to live up to.

It’s a good time for the MTG brand as a whole, too. Netflix is working on a Magic: The Gathering animated series with Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas at the helm. Much of the details of that project, like the upcoming Johnson-directed movie, are unclear for now, but Netflix has confirmed it’s still underway.

In general, video games and nerd properties have seen new levels of success on the silver screen lately. For years, game adaptations had a reputation for falling flat for both fans of the source material and moviegoers without any familiarity with the property. However, recent hits like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves have seemed to turn things around.

For now, it’s unclear how the Magic: The Gathering movie will fare among fans. It’s still in its early stages of pre-production, so audiences will have to wait to learn more about what to expect from it.
