“Look, here’s the problem in Hollywood, OK? There’s no rationale or logic behind absolutely anything.” - Unnamed studio executive

Very rarely can it be said that major movie studios call a deal between a movie studio and filmmaker/director a “Hollywood Apocalypse” and have it send ripples of anxiety through the entire industry. However, a deal struck between Ryan Coogler and Warner Bros. Studios over Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, is prompting them to react to it just like that. Some of the aspects of the deal with Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, are big ones, but not extraordinary, such as Coogler getting the final cut of Sinners, as well as its first gross.

The part of the deal that is getting the most attention from industry insiders is that Sinners will revert to Coogler after 25 years. This is often seen as unthinkable for most movie studios due to studios’ penchant for licensing, redistribution, and creating sequels for their films.  This is particularly the case for a studio that is in as much financial trouble as Warner Bros. studios, which suffered more than other major studios did during the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently experiencing.

It seems to appear differently, though, to studio executives, who view films as existing to be milked in perpetuity as much as for their inherent value.
