How Biddy Blas From 'Star Wars: Galactic Racer' Became A Meme Icon

Star Wars is full of small characters who leave an impact, whether it is on the audience who generates countless memes of certain characters and their moments, or the authors who seek to use these smaller characters at the fringes, or as more important figures, in their stories.
But the rise of Biddy Blas from Star Wars: Galactic Racer to a hall of fame featuring the likes of Klaud from Rise of Skywalker is a phenomenon worth discussing.
Empire Online, it seems, was the outlet to do that discussion, and performed a detailed deep-dive into the character’s background throughout the development of Galactic Racer, as well as why and how the character’s voice actor, Richard Summers-Calvert, performed him in the way that he did. The article is worth an independent read, being full of interesting behind-the-scenes thoughts from various creatives, but CultureSlate has some highlights to share.
Biddy Blas was originally conceived as a character archetype, Rager, someone who was a sore loser and a worse winner. The one notable example of the Crocin species, seen as one of the Sabacc players in Solo, spoke to the developers, and Biddy Blas was born. But, as opposed to the stern voice the developers had envisioned for the character, Richard Summers-Calvert took one look at the character, and decided they were an anxious, little-man syndrome-riddled racer, producing an anxious squawking voice that the developers quickly bonded to. Summers-Calvert, while a Star Wars fan, has also had to educate himself on what Glup Shittos are, and underestimated the sheer variety of memes regarding his character, though he has appreciated many of them at the same time.
