Universal is taking a page from Disney’s playbook and adapting one of its most successful animated films into live-action. Disney has used this technique with The Lion King, Pinocchio, Lady and The Tramp, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and The Beast, among others. Now, Universal will bring the 2010 academy award-nominated How to Train Your Dragon back to the big screen on March 14, 2025.

The animated film, based on the books by Cressida Cowell, is about a young boy named Hiccup nursing an injured dragon named Toothless back to health. The story also focuses on the quest the two had to combat humanity’s anti-dragon prejudice. The movie was successful enough to spawn two sequels: How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 2014 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 2019. The two protagonists focus on themes such as loss and love, and viewers can see the duo aging in ‘real time,’ which turns the trilogy into a sort of coming-of-age story. The trilogy made a total of $1.6 billion at the box office, resulting in spinoffs to include three TV series (DreamWorks Dragons, Rescue Riders, and The Nine Realms), as well as the live show How to Train Your Dragon on Ice.

Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed all three movies in the trilogy, will return to those roles in the remake, and casting is already underway. DeBlois has also worked on Lilo and Stitch, as well as the cohead of 1998’s Mulan, which was also recently given a live-action adaption. Marc Platt, known for his work on La La Land, Bridge of Spies, and Trial of the Chicago 7, is also listed as a producer.

The release of the live-action film on March 14, 2025, will be almost exactly 15 years after the release of the original, which was released on March 26th, 2010.
