Irene Cara, Singer Of The Themes From ‘Fame’ And ‘Flashdance,’ Has Passed Away At Age 63

Famed singer Irene Cara passed away in her Florida home at the age of 63 early in the morning on November 26, 2022. At present, the cause of death is unknown. Funeral services are pending, and a memorial service for fans is planned for a future date.

Irene Cara is best known for singing the theme music for the 1980s classics Fame and Flashdance. Her performance singing on the Fame soundtrack won her two Grammy’s for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Artist.

The actress/singer was born in the Bronx and began her career by singing and dancing on Spanish television. She went on to appear in more mainstream shows like Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, The Original Amateur Hour, and The Electric Company.

Cara also enjoyed a stint on Broadway, making her debut at the tender age of 9 in 1968’s Maggie Flynn. From there, she landed roles on and off-Broadway with such shows as The Me Nobody Knows, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Got Tu Go Disco, and Lotta, and took on the part of Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Cara’s publicist Judith Moore offered a touching tribute, “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films.” 

Moore shared the news on Twitter this morning.
