To have one of the greatest directors of all time snatch up the rights to your book, it must be one of the coolest feelings in the world.

That must be what author Joe Abercrombie is feeling at this moment. His latest book, The Devils, was just purchased by none other than James Cameron to be adapted into a film. Abercrombie had this to say about the news, “I can’t think of anyone better to bring this weird and wonderful monster of a book to the screen.”

Cameron is currently working on the next film in the Avatar saga, Fire and Ash. In a statement, he gushed over how much he’s loved Abercrombie’s books, like the First Law series and its successor series, The Age of Madness. When he finishes work on the third installment of the Avatar movies, he is going to devote his time to working on adapting The Devils to the screen.

Abercrombie himself is no stranger to the film industry, having lent his writing talents to the Netflix series Love, Death, and Robots. His books are typically characterized as what is known as grimdark fantasy. They feature less than honorable characters in unforgiving settings. The Devils, which he is on tour promoting right now, features a medieval Europe facing a threat of flesh-eating Elves, and the main character, Brother Diaz, is summoned to the Vatican to put together a team tasked with stopping this scourge. The team is made up of murderers, dark magic practitioners, and even monsters.

Makes sense. The tagline of the book is “holy work sometimes requires unholy deeds.”
