Star Wars Celebration may have brought with it the announcements of many future projects for Disney, but surprisingly an announcement for DC as well. While speaking to Collider at the event, James Mangold revealed that he would be writing and directing both his new Star Wars film and the new Swamp Thing film for the DCU. James Gunn followed this up on Twitter celebrating the reveal.

This confirmation comes as rumors have long been swirling about Mangold’s involvement in the project. In the interview, Mangold states that he is actively writing both films and does not know which project will move ahead first:

“It can all happen. It just takes time, there’s only one person.”

As the conversation returned to Swamp Thing and the interviewer complimented Alan Moore’s work on the character, Mangold smiled and mentioned Bernie Wrightson. As Wrightson co-created Swamp Thing and worked on his first-ever appearances, the film may be returning to the character’s roots.

Swamp Thing is no stranger to screens with two films and two shows of his own. He was recently reintroduced to audiences on the small screen in 2019 to good reviews but was canceled after a single season for unnamed reasons by the studio. The new film was first announced by James Gunn during the Chapter 1 Gods and Monsters reveal. Though no release date has been set, it is currently the last film in the announced slate. As Superman: Legacy won’t be released until 2025, fans will most likely have to wait a while before exploring The Green.
