Horror is a family affair! It’s been confirmed that award winning filmmaker Jonas Cuarón and his father Alfonso Cuarón are currently writing a horror film together.
During a recent screening of Alfonso Cuarón’s sci-fi classic Gravity, the father-son duo confirmed that they’re currently working on a horror film together. While it was briefly assumed that Alfonso would be returning to the movies after nearly a decade away, it’s actually his son Jonás who will direct the currently unknown horror film. Jonás made his directorial debut in 2007 with Año uña, which he also served as art director and cinematographer on. In 2015, he helmed his breakout film Desierto starring Gael García Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The film received positive reviews and was Mexico’s submission for Best International Film at the 89th Academy Awards, though it wasn’t nominated. Since then he’s directed Chupa and Campéon Gabacho. Jonás was briefly attached to the Sony Marvel film El Muerto, which was set to star Grammy-winning superstar legend Bad Bunny. The film was quietly cancelled due to the back-to-back critical and financial failures of Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter. Jonas and his father both wrote Gravity.
Alfonso Cuarón is one of the most beloved filmmakers of our time. After helming Sólo con tu pareja (Love in the Time of Hysteria in English) in 1991 and A Little Princess in 1995 Cuarón wrote and directed the critically acclaimed coming-of-age film Y tu mamá también, starring Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal in 2001. Since its release, the film has been hailed as one of the greatest coming-of-age films of all time and earned Cuarón and his brother Carlos an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In 2004, Cuarón hit the mainstream with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which received highly positive reviews, earned two Oscar nominations (including Best Original Score for John Williams), and remains the highest-grossing film directed by a Latino filmmaker. In 2006, Cuarón directed Children of Men, which earned 3 Oscar nominations and is frequently hailed as one of the greatest science fiction films of the 21st century. After a lengthy hiatus, Alfonso Cuarón returned with Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in 2013. Praised for its innovative visual effects, breathtaking cinematography, chilling score, and Cuarón’s confident direction, Gravity won 7 of its 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Cuarón. The most awarded film at the Oscars of the entire 2010s decade, Gravity was recently named one of the 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century by The New York Times.

In 2018, Cuarón acted as director, writer, cinematographer, and co-editor on Roma, starring Yalitza Aparicio. The film received critical acclaim and won 3 Oscars, including Best International Film and Best Director. Like Gravity, it’s widely considered to be one of the greatest films of the 21st century. Sadly, Alfonso Cuarón has yet to return to the big screen, stating in interviews that multiple ideas he’s had have fallen through. He created and directed every episode of the Apple TV series Disclaimer in 2024. Cuarón has been rumored to be involved with a handful of projects, including a biopic about Philip K. Dick, the upcoming 26th James Bond film, and Avengers: Doomsday. The latter two films will be helmed by Denis Villeneuve and the Russo Brothers respectively.
