People have been wondering what will be next for the twin Duffer Brothers since the Series Finale of Stranger Things on Netflix last New Year’s Eve.
No one had too long to wonder, as Matt and Ross Duffer announced they were moving to Paramount in August, and they finalized a four-year deal with the studio in April enabling them to make not only television programs but movie projects as well.

Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos explained that the brothers had worked with Netflix for over a decade and wanted to move on to different types of projects, mainly, the opportunity to make big-budget theatrical releases that Netflix could not provide them. Sarandos revealed part of the conversation that they had:
“The Duffers have worked with us for [a] decade and did not want to make more TV shows right now. They really want to make big tentpole theatrical movies. And I said to Matt and Ross, ‘You guys are great at what you do, and I think you should go do that. You’re 40. Don’t wake up when you’re 60 wishing you did that 20 years later.’ And I’m thrilled for them. They’re going to have great success.”

The brothers said that they had not been looking to leave Netflix, but they realized that they wanted to make movies. They had worked with Paramount’s Cindy Holland and Matt Thunell while still at Netflix, and their move to that studio was based on the relationships they created with the two of them. Matt Duffer said, “The biggest draw to us was just to be able to do something theatrical, which is not something Netflix does.”
