Two films previously only available on Netflix, or at special movie theater screenings are making their way to a physical release in the Criterion Collection. The first of these films is Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, starring Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster. The film received nine nominations for the Academy Awards. It was a long road for Del Toro to bring this film to reality. But after decades of ups and downs, the film finally aired on Netflix with Oscar Issac, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth joining Elordi on screen.

The second film is the viral KPop Demon Hunters. This animated film found global success with its music filling up social media pages. The movie was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and won a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award in the categories of Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Song, “Golden.” That song also won a Grammy, making it the first KPop Grammy winner. The movie is currently nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

The Criterion Collection gathers classic and contemporary films with the best technical aspects. The group often includes new behind-the-scenes looks or special interviews to accompany the films. The physical releases of these films provide accessibility to those who can’t afford to continually pay for a streaming service and also ensure that the film on the disc will stay unchanged. Previous Netflix films that found their way into the Criterion Collection include Roma, The Irishman, The Power of the Dog, Marriage Story, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.” Sentimental Value, It Was Just An Accident, and The Secret Agent are also making their way into the collection.
