Sam Witwer is back again to voice Darth Maul for the soon-to-be-released Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord. In the latest issue of Star Wars Insider, Witwer revealed everything that went into the making of the animated series, which pushes the bar in every possible way, as well as his deep involvement in the creative process. The series reveals a different side of Maul, and everything is shown from his perspective, which will be a refreshing twist on the dark side for a Star Wars protagonist. Again, there’s no reason to think that a Star Wars animated series is merely for kids, as Shadow Lord takes a nuanced approach to Maul’s complex emotions following the destruction of the Jedi Order and Palpatine’s betrayal. Witwer says Maul is “confused, and a little apprehensive” as he comes to terms with life after The Clone Wars. Maul is also “very angry at Palpatine” and believes he’s somewhat superior to the man who’s “the root of his suffering”.

Maul has trouble trusting people, but he’s still ruthless and dangerous. In the series, he will be seen working with Rook Kast, a Mandalorian all The Clone Wars fans should be very familiar with. Maul listens to her and trusts her more than others he comes across. In the interview, Witwer revealed that Maul’s opinion on the Jedi has evolved even though he was trained to hate their very existence. Maul “may not have agreed with the Jedi Knights, but at least they had principles. You knew who you were dealing with, and you could reason with that. There’s no reasoning with the Empire.” It seems like Maul will be grappling with this harsh reality throughout the show. He will also be shown coming to grips with how he treated his brother, Savage Oppress, and fans will see that he still remembers him.

Witwer, along with the show’s creative team, worked on developing an original subplot that wasn’t a part of the show’s script, but ended up “strange, emotional, and absolutely Star Wars.” He was also filmed as live-action Maul for footage, “so the animators see how my eyes and expressions worked.” He revealed that Dave Filoni made it clear that the creative team had “to do everything better: acting, scripts, story, cinematography, sound,” and “told us to push everything further.” Sam Witwer’s complete interview is out now as a part of Star Wars Insider #236. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord premieres April 6 on Disney+.
