New 'Star Wars: Shadow Of Maul' Comic Series Paves The Way For The Animated Series

Next year’s animated series about Darth Maul isn’t the only thing his fans have to look forward to. Marvel Comics just announced Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, a five-issue prequel series set before the events of Maul: Shadow Lord, written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov. Percy is no newcomer to writing about the character. Last year’s Star Wars: Darth Maul: Black, White, and Red series was also written by him. However, he considers them “Flirtations with the franchise”, adding that “With Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, I'm able to share a more expansive story about one of my favorite characters, while also exploring a fresh angle on the Star Wars universe.”
Disney+’s Maul: Shadow Lord goes into Maul’s plan to “rebuild his criminal syndicate on Janix, a planet untouched by the Empire.” The Shadow of Maul comic series will introduce Janix as well as the brand-new characters from the series, including Captain Brander Lawson and a new droid named 'Two Boots.’ Percy has described the series as “a sci-fi story, but it's also a crime story.” The following is a summary of the first issue of Star Wars: Shadow of Maul:

Percy shared his excitement about working with Madibek Musabekov, whom he calls a legend, and says, “His art is gritty and grounded and perfectly matches the noir tone. We've been in close contact with Lucasfilm—reading scripts and watching episodes of this fantastic new animated series—and our story will serve as a prelude to what viewers will see play out on the screen.” Star Wars: Shadow of Maul #1 will go on sale at comic stores on March 3, 2026. Maul: Shadow Lord premieres next year on Disney+.
