Kristen Stewart spent years portraying Bella Swan in the blockbuster Twilight Saga films, which were based on Stephenie Meyer’s highly successful novels about Swan and Edward Cullen’s human-meets-vampire love story, and the chaos resulting from it. The films became a global phenomenon, grossing billions, while catapulting Stewart and her co-stars, especially her ex-boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, to unimaginable levels of fame. Years later, Stewart has become an Oscar-nominated actress and, now, a celebrated director too. Her directorial debut, Chronology of Water, garnered attention at film festivals over the past few months. At the Palm Springs International Film Festival on January 4, she confessed that the project she would most like to remake as a director is the first Twilight film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke.

Stewart confessed, “I would love — look. I love what Catherine did, I love what Chris did, I love what all of the directors did with the movies.” She added, “Imagine if we had like, a huge budget and a bunch of love and support. I don’t know… I would love to readapt.” The actress has said in the past that among all the directors of the Twilight saga, Hardwicke was the one who had the most freedom to apply her creative vision to the production. Every subsequent director had to fight all the voices in the room because the films had simply become too big. Hardwicke was able to work on Twilight as if it were an indie film, while the rest of the directors had a larger budget, but bigger expectations to meet, which may have stifled their creativity.

Stewart has also been vocal about the difficulty of being a female director in Hollywood, but she is intrigued by the idea of remaking the first film, which is surprising, as so much of her life was spent already portraying the lead character in the Twilight franchise. Many fans and critics believed Stewart and Pattinson hated the films, but in recent years, they’ve shared how grateful they are for what they did for their respective careers, and it would be exciting to see how Kristen Stewart would adapt Stephenie Meyer’s work.
