Every new year brings new expectations for upcoming films, and since COVID, performance at the Box Office is anything but guaranteed. The previous year saw its share of ups and downs, but it ended on a high note, largely due to films like Avatar: Fire and Ash, Lilo and Stitch, and Zootopia 2, all of which grossed over a billion dollars for Disney. Additionally, films like Sinners and Weapons provided a boost to the horror genre, becoming critical and major box office successes. This year, Marvel and Star Wars will return to the big screen, and Christopher Nolan will be back again. Variety recently predicted which bracket every major release will fall under, starting with the films they believe are sure-shot blockbusters.
This list includes The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Toy Story 5, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and The Odyssey. The Nintendo brand’s appeal backs the Super Mario Galaxy movie, while Toy Story 5 has a track record of delivering. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a history of success and marks the return of current superstars, Tom Holland and Zendaya. Christopher Nolan’s take on Homer’s epic tale, The Odyssey, is backed by Nolan’s incredible previous successes, including the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, and boasts big names among the cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya.

Star Wars’ return to cinemas for the first time since 2019, with The Mandalorian and Grogu, is included in Variety’s “Safe Bets”, alongside, surprisingly, Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel and Star Wars may struggle to lure fans due to superhero fatigue. On Variety’s official Twitter account, their predictions about The Mandalorian aren’t being appreciated by fans, who believe it’s anything but a safe bet. The Mandalorian and Grogu has not been promoted much by Disney and Lucasfilm, and Star Wars fans have apparently fallen out of love with the series that launched Disney+ and dazzled viewers, both young and old, back in 2019.
They also don’t seem to be over Andor yet, and there’s an overwhelming feeling that they want the movie to perform badly so the Mandoverse can end at last. At the moment, Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and their ‘Mandoverse’ may be suffering from fatigue, as fans don’t seem as fond of them as they once were. Variety, however, believes that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” will benefit from goodwill and brand recognition.” Fans may have completely forgotten that Din Djarin and Grogu’s popularity goes beyond the Star Wars fandom, and in fact, the duo has brought new fans into the fold. Variety sounds more cautious about Doomsday, as they feel the superhero fatigue might lead to problems for Marvel at the box office. Their other “Safe Bet” includes the Colleen Hoover adaptation, Verity. It will only be a few months before their predictions are put to the test as all these films are slated for release this year, and promotion for most of them, including The Odyssey, Avengers: Doomsday, and to some extent, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is already underway.
