The Blade reboot has been in turmoil since Marvel announced the vampire hunter’s return at San Diego Comic-Con, four years ago. Lead Actor, Mahershala Ali reportedly nearly walked over script issues. Kevin Feige has started from scratch on a whole new story with a fresh writer (Michael Green), in a bid to save the project.

Kang is a major Marvel villain with an arc planned through multiple films, known as the Kang Dynasty. It’s unclear whether Johnathan Major was scheduled to appear in Blade, or whether his recent controversy played a part in the reshuffle. The WGA strike also hit Blade hard, stopping work on the script completely.

But now it appears that work has resumed, and Mahershala Ali only has positive things to say. In a recent interview, he stated:

"I'm really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we'll be back at it relatively soon. I'm sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who's on board and who's leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that.”

Blade is going to be R-rated, fitting with the 1998 movie which was more graphic than the current crop of superhero films. Deadpool 3 is Marvel’s only R-rated cinematic release, so this will be a big test of the market. Reflecting the darker tone, Yann Demange (Top Boy) is taking up the director’s chair, and Marvel hopes to film by the summer of 2024. Let’s pray that the production doesn’t run into any more stumbling blocks!
