Marvel has announced that their upcoming vampire hunter superhero movie, Blade, will be joining another Marvel film, the upcoming Deadpool 3, as an R-rated MCU film. The upcoming MCU series, Echo, which is set to debut on Disney+ and Hulu in January 2024, will carry an equivalent TV-MA rating. Previous Marvel releases, Logan, the previous two Deadpool films, and the original Blade franchise films were also rated “R”, though they were not part of the MCU canon. Director Yann Demange explained why he felt the film having an “R” rating was important:

“I come out of this wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work,” he said. “But for Blade, we are going to have fun because [star Mahershala Ali] is such a deep actor. I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”

For those unfamiliar with the titular hero, Blade is a vampire hunter whose mother was turned into a vampire as his mother was giving birth to him, which gave him immunity from being turned into a vampire. He later gained even more supernatural abilities and later gained the nickname “Blade” for his choices in weaponry. He dedicated himself to hunting vampires, searching in particular for the one who turned his mother at his birth. His exploits brought him into contact with other Marvel superheroes, especially Morbius and Doctor Strange.

Blade made his first appearances in Marvel comics and has appeared occasionally in animated series over the years as well. Actor Wesley Snipes assumed the titular role of Blade in a trilogy of films from 1998-2004. A short-lived live-action series was also produced in 2006 for Spike TV. The new MCU-connected film was announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2019, with actor Marshala Ali assuming the titular role. The movie has suffered many delays since its announcement, including writer changes and reports of Ali’s unhappiness with the movie. As of right now, IMDB.com reports an expected release date of February 2025. No specific plot details have been released.
