'The Odyssey' Still Going Strong At The Box Office

While it may have had many early skeptics, The Odyssey continues to dominate the box office. Numerous voices across social media expressed worry over the casting and “historical accuracy” before the film’s release. Yet Christopher Nolan has proven, yet again, to studios and audiences why he has the status of filmmaker he does. In a theatrical year that saw such a major title as The Mandalorian and Grogu be dethroned by the smaller indie-horror title Obsession, Nolan’s film has safely taken a victory lap in its second weekend.
Currently sitting at number one with domestic box office earnings of over $286 million, The Odyssey has already beaten some records in its first two weeks. This prior week saw only a 30% decrease in ticket sales, landing the movie just below Deadpool and Wolverine as the second-lowest drop in earnings for an R-rated film’s second weekend. Globally, it has surpassed $639 million, making well over double the production cost of $250 million.
With an impressive 94% critic score and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, combined with the record-breaking box office earnings, it is safe to say The Odyssey has been a major success. These two weekends have belonged strongly to Nolan, but this weekend sees the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. For stars in both films, Tom Holland and Zendaya, it should be another weekend of success. For Odysseus, how the seas shall fare forward is yet to be seen.
