Neon Genesis Evangelion is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary. As part of the celebration, the original creator Hidekai Anno plans to show a short film, Evangelion 30th Anniversary Special Performance, during Eva Fest once per day from February 21-23, 2026. The official press release clocks the film as 13 minutes long. No story details have been revealed yet, but Anno is in charge of planning, script, and overall supervision. Naoyuki Asano will direct the project with Kazuya Tsurumaki, Shinji Higuchi, and Ikki Todoroki joining as supervisors. Asano previously served as animation director for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time.

So far, there are no known plans for a theatrical, streaming, or home release, so it may just be a special treat for Eva Fest attendees. This news comes at a welcome time for anime fans, with the previous news that the company behind Evangelion, Studio Gainax, is closing down. In related news, Yuko Miyamura, the voice of Asuka Langley Soryu, is becoming a VTuber with a new avatar. The last Evangelion release was Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time, so any new media, even a short film, is welcome news for anime fans.
