Every year, Hollywood attempts a new Jane Austen adaptation, which inevitably carries the pressure of living up to Austen’s beloved novels. However, the latest Sense and Sensibility adaptation has even bigger shoes to fill. The new movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood and Esme Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood. It is Diana Reid and director Georgia Oakley’s vision for the novel. Following the world premiere on September 15, the latest adaptation has received surprisingly positive reviews. Most fans know the novel from its near-perfect 1995 movie adaptation, starring Emma Thompson,Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, and Hugh Grant. Although fans of the 1995 masterpiece will probably approach the latest adaptation with the same caution that fans of the 1995 Pride and Prejudice approached the 2005 movie starring Keira Knightley, so far, this version seems to have struck a chord.

Early reviews praise the performances and chemistry between the actors, including Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles, for their warm and natural portrayal of Elinor and Marianne’s sisterly bond. One critic calls it a “thrill for the Austen purists” and says, “Ooh #SenseandSensibility will THRILL the Austen purists. Simultaneously gorgeously faithful to the spirit (& letter) of the text, while coming across as totally fresh for today. The sisterly bond is sublime, Fiona Shaw steals every scene & the men are a really pleasant surprise.” Another critic praises its visuals and how well it captures the wittiness of Austen’s work: “I can finally shout about how much I adored Georgia Oakley’s SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, a handsomely shot and scored adaptation that centers Esmé Creed-Miles’s sensitive Marianne, to its benefit. Warm, witty, and wise, it captures the best of Austen. Every role is perfectly cast.” For all the romantics out there, there’s already lots of praise for the chemistry between Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and George MacKay as Edward Ferrars. Esme Creed-Miles has also received high praise for her take on Marianne, after Kate Winslet previously made her mark as the naive Austen heroine in the 1995 film. It is being hailed as “a joyous and stunningly shot film that features a fair mix of wit, heartbreak and sweeping romance that will no doubt please author purists, and win over anyone who’s new to this story.” Sense and Sensibility is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 16, 2026.
