If there’s one video game series that’s lasted the test of time and become so ingrained in the culture that everybody knows it, it’s Mario.

But if there’s another one, it’s Pokémon. There’s no need to delve into the history of Pokémon. It’s one of the most popular franchises in history. However, it’s hit a bit of a slump lately. Most of the games recently have fallen under the “good but not great” umbrella, with the highest rated one being Legends: Arceus, a game I have played through more than once. With the release of Legends: Z-A in 2025, the question was naturally, what comes next?

We have our answer.

Technically, we had our answer a little while back, thanks to leaks, but we now have an official announcement. The next Pokémon games, Winds and Waves. Taking place in a Polynesian Island-inspired region, it will be interesting to see how things develop. A new type of Pokémon has already been rumored, and island-hopping mechanics are looking interesting. there are three new starter Pokémon: Browt, the grass-type grumpy bird; Pombon, a fire-type Pomeranian; and Gecqua, a water-type lizard. It’s unknown as of yet if the series will revert to its classic turn based combat or keep with the controversial button-mashing combat seen in Z-A. I’m personally hoping for the former, and for the to remove the ability to be attacked by wild Pokémon and Pokémon during trainer battles, both things also seen in Z-A.

One thing we do know for sure is that the game will be a Switch 2 exclusive, so anyone who doesn’t have one is out of luck if they want to play it.

Winds and Waves are due to come out sometime in 2027
