In September, court documents were released via Reddit, coincidentally around the same time that the new trailer for Aquaman 2 dropped. They contained handwritten notes from Amber Heard’s therapist, Dr. Hughes, from a session where the actress described toxic conditions on the set. “Jason said he wanted me fired,” the notes say. “Jason drunk — late on set.” Heard continued to say that Jason dressed like Johnny, complete with all the rings.  A DC spokesperson said that “Jason Momoa conducted himself in a professional manner at all times on the set of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’”

Another insider said, "Jason works his ass off, likes to have a beer once in a while like everyone, but doesn’t show up drunk to set. He isn’t dressing like Johnny Depp. He has always dressed in that bohemian style.” The notes included comments about the Director, James Wan, as well. “He raised his voice @ me — ‘I can’t even post about Aquaman’ — made it like it was my fault – I said ‘I’m sorry.’ Nobody could take selfies with me on set given blackout.” A DC spokesperson said, “James is known for treating members of his cast and crew with the utmost respect and for fostering a positive, collaborative environment on set — the ‘Aquaman’ films were no exception.”

Heard faced termination, but the reasoning was based on a lack of chemistry with Jason Momoa. After Aquaman was released in 2018, Wan and the studio sent a letter to Heard’s attorney informing him that the decision was made to cut the actress from the sequel due to the lack of chemistry between her and Momoa. Walter Hamada, the former figurehead of DC, testified to that during the defamation trial. Sources maintain that the decision to toss Heard back out to sea was made well before Depp filed the lawsuit in 2019.

Another source, by contrast, commented that Heard completed a chemistry test before being cast and beat out two other actresses to earn the role of Mera. Heard’s ex-boyfriend, Elon Musk, tasked someone from his legal team to send a “scorched-earth letter to Warner Bros. threatening to burn the house down” if the actress could not reprise her role. When Variety contacted them, Momoa’s Rep., Director Wan, and Musk did not comment on this report. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is expected to hit theaters in the US on December 20, 2023.
