Oh no, there goes Tokyo, once again. GKIDS has acquired the North American distribution rights to Shin Godzilla. A unique take on the Kaiju franchise directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, the story focuses on the emergence of Godzilla in 2016 Japan, as the monster evolves and tears through Tokyo. Anno’s first major live-action project, the film was a big success in its native Japan, grossing $79 million at the box office, making it the most successful Godzilla movie at the time of its release. Gkids, having been acquired by distributor Toho, is now planning a quick theatrical release in the United States on Aug. 14, in 4K.
GKIDS said of their distribution of the film, “With an incredibly timely story of people struggling to work together to stop imminent destruction, backed by some of the most explosive action scenes the franchise has ever seen, ‘Shin Godzilla’ is a modern masterpiece. We are honored to play a part in bringing the film back for American fans, better than ever.” With GKIDS' library expanding over the years, it's only fitting that the King of Monsters joins their ranks. Shin Godzilla, after its theatrical release, will be coming again to home video, so don’t miss it if you can.
