'Powerpuff Girls' Movie In The Works From Warner Brothers

The trio who fight crime before bedtime may be returning to the big screen. A new Powerpuff Girls movie is currently in early development at Warner Brothers Pictures Animation. This news was shared on Monday at the Annecy Animation Film Festival in France. However, inside sources note that there is currently no deal in place. As such, there are no plot details as of this writing, but since the studio’s animation arm announced it, it will be an animated film, likely unrelated to the ill-fated live-action adaptation that was set to premiere on The CW.
Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken, premiered on Cartoon Network in 1998, running until 2005, and follows three young girls who fight crime in the city of Townsville: Blossom (voiced by Cathy Cavadini), Bubbles (voiced by Tara Strong), and Buttercup (voiced by E.G. Daily). The girls are the creation of Professor Utonium (voiced by the late Tom Kane), who aimed to create the perfect little girls using “sugar, spice, and everything nice.” However, as said in the show’s intro, the professor “accidentally added an extra ingredient to the concoction: Chemical X!” This is what gives the girls their superpowers.

This would not be the franchise’s first time on the silver screen, as in 2002, The Powerpuff Girls Movie made its way to theaters. The film acted as an origin story of sorts for the girls and links Mojo Jojo, the main villain of the series, to their creation, as this film shows him as the professor’s pet chimpanzee and destructive lab assistant who accidentally broke the flask of Chemical X, causing an explosion that impacted the concoction and himself. Though the film was received positively, it was a box office failure, earning $16 million on a budget of $11 million.
After the series’s conclusion in 2005, it remained relevant with an anime that has yet to reach US shores (despite receiving an English dub by Ocean Productions), two specials in 2009 and 2014 (the latter featuring voice work and music by former Beatle Ringo Starr), and a reboot series in 2016 that featured new voices for the girls themselves. There is no word on whether or not this planned film will follow suit with a new voice cast, particularly considering the recent passing of Tom Kane, who voiced not only the professor but also the villain Him. This is still a developing story.
