Casual adventurers and hardcore fans of Dungeons & Dragons will likely be shaken in one way or another by the latest news from the realms. After the release of the upcoming sourcebook, Bigby Presents: Glory to the Giants, all future D&D books will increase their cost by 20%, going up from $49.95 to $59.95. No campaign could prepare us for this change.

Wizards of the Coast stated that ensuring the funding for future projects is the reason behind the price update for their products. However, the company clarified the increase in price will not affect books released prior to the Glory of the Giants expansion being released in August this year. Additionally, this price update will not affect the digital version of the sourcebooks.

How will this impact the community? It is difficult to tell with certainty. With a variety of products coming out constantly, such as dice, accessories, props, figures, and rulebooks, playing Dungeons & Dragons was already a costly hobby. There may be unintended consequences to increasing prices: players may not be able to continually afford their hobby, or new players will not be willing to give the game a shot.

Wizards of the Coast were confident in their decision, emphasizing backward compatibility with existing 5E materials. A WOTC spokesperson talked to IGN and stated: "The new price will only be for new products going forward and the ability to carry forward existing books helps. Also, digital prices aren’t increasing."

The revised core 5th edition rulebooks will release in 2024, and as stated by Wizards, the rise in prices will not affect this release. Nonetheless, numerous partners and competitors could find an opportunity to increase prices to pair their current products with newer books.

Unfortunately for the players and Dungeon Masters, there is nothing to be done about this change; they can only adapt. One thing the D&D community is known for is their imagination; certainly there will be some sort of solution to the issue while maintaining a wholesome community.
