New Transformers Animated Movie Coming

At CinemaCon in April, it was announced that, in addition to the upcoming live-action Transformers movie, Rise of the Beasts, releasing this summer, Transformers fans will also be getting a brand new animated movie in 2024, tentatively entitled Transformers One.

While there have been several iterations of Transformers over the years, including several animated series and, to date, seven live-action movies based on the popular “robots in disguise” toy line, this will mark the first animated (theatrical) movie release since The Transformers The Movie (1986) hit theaters nearly four decades ago.

The movie, Transformers One, will reportedly be a prequel, focusing on the origin stories of Optimus Prime and Megatron and their respective factions on their home planet of Cybertron before the war between the Autobots and Deceptions ravaged the planet and came to Earth.

While there have been some Transformers media that has delved into some of the lore about the beginnings of Cybertron and the Transformers, it remains to be seen how much lore from those sources the upcoming movie decides to borrow from, if at all. Since nearly all of the iterations of the Transformers have had different continuities and lore, the storyline may wind up being some blend of some or all of them.

Transformers One, like the first animated Transformers movie, as well as other live-action Transformers movies, boasts some major Hollywood star power. The announced cast so far includes Chris Hemsworth (MCU), as the Autobot leader Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse) as the Decepticon leader, Megatron, Scarlett Johansson (MCU) as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Alpha Trion.

Paramount Animation has announced a tentative July 19, 2024 release date for the movie. Josh Cooley, who previously helmed Toy Story 4, will be directing from a script written by Gabriel Ferrari and Andrew Barrer. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to open this summer on June 9, 2023.
