Ryan Gosling Is… ‘Ghost Rider’

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced the newest addition to the MCU. Ryan Gosling is set to play the role of Ghost Rider in a new standalone movie directed by Shawn Levy. The actor and director previously worked together in the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, due out next year. Levy expressed a bit of deja vu, having shown Deadpool & Wolverine at this same event two years ago. He said, “I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the greatest fans. Gosling is the absolute shit. I say that with tremendous respect. We spent a lot of time last year making Starfighter, and the opportunity as Ryan started talking about this character, I was like, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ We’ll see you in 2028.”

No details are known about Gosling’s character including which Ghost Rider he would play, but odds seem pretty likely that he will play the original Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze. Johnny is a man who made a deal with the devil, or Mephisto in the Marvel Universe, to save his father from cancer. But such deals always have a catch, and his father dies from a stunt accident instead. As a result, Johnny is bonded to a demon known as the Spirit of Vengeance, giving his head the appearance of a flaming skull. The role was previously played by Nicolas Cage in 2007’s Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. A new Ghost Rider Robby Reyes was created for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In the comics, Danny Ketch and Donnie Reyes also take up the mantle. As far as Gosling’s take, the only confirmed information is the director and the 2028 release date.
