In a time when AI is causing Hollywood to struggle again, yet another complication from the technology has come up. The SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) has come under fire for using AI for the ironic purpose of promoting a tech summit. “Fellow visual unions and locals that are negotiating this coming year. This weakens their efforts,” said Karla Ortiz who worked on Marvel works Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame, and Avengers: Infinity War. A spokesperson for the SAG countered this point, stating that it was not AI-generated, but was made by human artists using AI to assist them. “I think generative AI is one of the worst ideas we’ve ever had in this society,” said actor Justine Bateman.

The Summit is planned for January 9-10. It promises to “bring together leaders from across the labor movement, entertainment sector, and technology space to discuss what innovation means for the future of workers. The Summit centers working people in conversations about innovation and technology change while focusing on worker advocacy, policies, and programs that ensure working people thrive alongside innovation. From information and education to labor-management collaboration and training initiatives, the Summit shines a light on the people driving change and progress.”
