The Rings of Power showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne are gearing up for season three. In an interview with Empire, McKay promises a darker season, a bold take since the last season ended in a brutal war. According to McKay, this season is when the one ring will be forged. Payne added, “We have a full-on villain this season, in a way that was quite different before,” citing Sauron’s emergence. He continued, “This third season is darker, more dangerous. No one is safe.”

Charlie Vickers, who plays the infamous Sauron, called the experience a privilege to capture. He explained, “We were doing the Ring across two weeks, because the sequence is so long.” McKay described the finished project as “the single most ambitious, technically challenging sequence we’ve ever done on the show. Charlie’s performance is absolutely staggering. We never could have prepared for it.” The showrunners explained that the first two seasons were focused on worldbuilding. McKay added, “But throughout that time, we’re lighting all these fuses and setting all these stories in motion. The third season is when all those bombs are starting to explode.” The explosive third season hits Prime Video on November 11, 2026. Season 1 and 2 are currently streaming on the platform.
