Great news, Star Wars fans — the Star Wars timeline is finally moving into the future. While The Mandalorian and Grogu was the primary focus during the opening panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan, we were also given a glimpse of what's to come. Kathleen Kennedy took the stage to announce Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling.

Not much is known about the film at this time, other than that it will be a standalone story set after Episode IX.

This is an exciting announcement for Star Wars fans, as the post-Sequel Trilogy era has long been one many hoped would finally begin to open up following the release of The Rise of Skywalker. It now appears that Lucasfilm is ready to move forward, both with the timeline and in its cinematic storytelling. Levy confirmed the film is currently in pre-production, with shooting set to begin this fall and a planned release date of May 28, 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise.

This is a great time to be a Star Wars fan, and hopefully, it signals the beginning of a new era filled with more Star Wars films to come. Kathleen Kennedy also mentioned the Taika Waititi film, James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi project, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film centered on Rey.

The future looks bright in a galaxy far, far away.
