Shocking Finale To 'Doctor Who' Season 2 As Ncuti Gatwa Exits The Show

Season two of Doctor Who has come to a close, and its ending was rather explosive. The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, brought Poppy back after the restoration of reality wiped her existence. Doing so marked the end of the actor’s run, as a regeneration occurred, teasing a last-minute familiar face as the next Doctor. In a BBC press release, Gatwa commented on his time as the character and his departure.
He explained, “You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. This journey has been one that I will never forget…” The actor touched on the role itself, “There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years.”

Gatwa continued, "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can’t thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience. I’ve loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have.”

With Gatwa’s time coming to a close, the Sixteenth Doctor will be stepping up to the plate. During the regeneration scene in the finale, the audience could see the face of Billie Piper. Piper originally played the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s companion, Rose Tyler, on the show. The actress commented on her return, "It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse… so to be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse, but who, how, why and when, you’ll just have to wait and see."
The fifteenth series, or second season, of Doctor Who continues the Fifteenth Doctor’s story. Joined by new companion Belinda Chandra, the pair go on out-of-this-world adventures, culminating in the return of familiar faces, a showdown with the Rani, and a regeneration. The entire season is available to stream on Disney+.
