Swifties rejoice! Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has purchased back the rights to the master recordings of her first six albums after losing them in 2019. She announced this exciting news in a statement on her website.

"All of the music I've ever made now belongs to me,” Swift said in the statement, "I've been bursting into tears of joy... ever since I found out this is really happening."

The singer lost the rights to her master recordings in 2019 after music manager Scooter Braun bought her former record label, Big Machine, and with this purchase came the rights to Taylor Swift's first six albums: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation. In response, as James Taylor did before, after switching from Beatles-founded Apple Corps to Warner Bros Records, Taylor Swift re-recorded the full albums under the “Taylor's Versions” title. This effectively diminishes the value of the original recordings and puts the rights back into her hands. There were also other issues with the deal, such as Braun’s complicity in the “incessant, manipulative bullying" of one of his clients, Kanye West.

What once seemed unimaginable to the singer is now real. Swift stated in the announcement that she “almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away.” However, that is “all in the past now,” she says.

As for the “Taylor’s Versions” recordings, Swift says that she hasn’t completed them yet after "hitting a stopping point" after attempting to remake 2017’s Reputation. While she has released a few re-recorded tracks off the album, she plans to release the rest of them from the vault only if her fans are "into the idea,” as she feels the album can’t be improved much by remaking it. Regardless, this is a huge victory for the artist and musical artists in general.
