There are still a lot of unknowns surrounding the conclusion of the rebooted Star Trek movies, which started in 2009 with Star Trek, directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. These movies, commonly referred to as the “Kelvinverse” or “Kelvin timeline,” starred Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Ubran (Dr. McCoy), Zoe Saldana ( Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), and Anton Yelchin (Chekov). Orci and Kurtzman continued to write for Star Trek Into Darkness and added Damon Lindelof to the team. Then Star Trek Beyond departed from the Orci and Kurtzman screenwriting pair, with Simon Pegg and Doug Jung writing instead.

There’s been a lot of back and forth on directors attached to Star Trek 4, notably Matt Shakman, who went on to do WandaVision and The Fantastic Four. Previous drafts of a script for the fourth film have been connected to Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel). These names have since broken off from the project, but most of the actors are expected to return reprising their characters from Star Trek: The Original Series.
