Kelly Marie Tran continued her journey to the horror drama with Rock Springs, which premiered at this year’s Sundance. Following the premiere, she signed with Gersh as her agency. Rock Springs was the debut for writer-director Vera Miao and focuses on a grieving widow moving to a new town. As things often go with this genre, the house isn’t quite what it seems and terrors await. In a previous interview with Deadline, Miao explained the inspiration for her indie film as “a fully formed question that popped in my head…can I explore diaspora through horror?” Diaspora is best understood as an exile or a scattering of people from their homeland. The film is also based partly on the Rock Springs Massacre of 1885. In that event, white coalminers killed at least twenty-eight Chinese coalminers.

Tran’s first horror film was Control Freak, a 2025 Hulu horror film. While new to the genre, she’s no stranger to the screen. Tran has previously starred as Rose Tico in the sequel Star Wars trilogy, breaking ground as the first woman of color in a leading role. She reprised that role in the animated projects Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Star Wars Forces of Destiny, LEGO Star Wars: All Stars, Lego Star Wars: Summer Vacation, and The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. Tran also voiced the titular character in Raya and the Last Dragon, making her the first Southeast Asian actress starring in a Disney animated feature. Her further credits include Netflix’s Sweet Tooth and Bleecker Street’s The Wedding Banquet, and Jing Ai Ng’s Forge. After signing with Gersh, Tran is still represented by 1V1 Entertainment, 2PM Sharp, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
