Star Wars: Visions is a unique series of shorts that are disconnected from the main lore of the Star Wars universe. Episodes The Ninth Jedi from season one and The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope from season three caught the eyes of fans in particular. Enough interest was drummed up that a spin-off series is in development, continuing the lore presented in these episodes. In an email interview with Polygon, Visions producer Josh Rimes and director Naoyoshi Shiotani discussed the impact of the episodes and their potential to expand the Star Wars universe.
Rimes began with the potential held by Visions, praising the storytelling abilities of the studios involved, “As the Visions anthologies sprung to life, we began thinking about how to expand the storytelling medium of Visions beyond shorts. It’s really a testament to the shorts and their storytellers that so many gave us such lived in worlds and such vivid and exciting characters and adventures.”

He explained how this specific universe was an ideal basis for a longer form spin-off, “The world of The Ninth Jedi always felt so epic-scaled and the ending to the first short promised a grand journey to come, so discussions with director Kenji Kamiyama and the team at Production I.G naturally evolved.” Rimes mentioned the energy surrounding the opportunity to expand this lore, “We were just excited to hear their enthusiasm about Kara’s journey to find her father and her quest to restore the Jedi Order and how those two missions might dovetail or even come into conflict.”
Shiotani delved into the main character, “We saw Kara lose her father and set out on this journey with her new companions in the last short, but deep down, she still carries the heaviest trauma of all: not knowing where her father is.” She continued, “Precisely because she is such a positive and optimistic character, she struggles to open up to her friends about what she’s really going through.” Given Kara’s current emotional state, there is ample room for character development.
