Over twenty years after the original animated feature premiered, the live-action Lilo & Stitch has surpassed most expectations to become one of the highest-grossing Disney films. Despite having negative reviews at some of the revisions that were made between the original cartoon and the live-action remake’s endings, especially that Lilo’s sister, Nani, leaves Lilo to go to college in the remake, whereas in the original, the emphasis was on “Ohana (family)”. The original film made a good showing of $273 million at the worldwide box office back in 2002, but, helped with a marketing campaign which included a Superbowl ad where Stitch runs on the football field, and plenty of nostalgia, the live-action remake has made over $1.04 Billion globally and had the top spot for all films of 2025 until Zootopia 2 opened.
Once it made the crossover to Disney + streaming, 2025’s Lilo & Stitch had over 14.3 million streams in five days. Not to mention, there is plenty of Lilo & Stitch merchandise, from blankets and pajamas, jewelry, plushies, and school backpacks. All together, Disney has made over $4 Billion in merchandise sales alone.
What does this mean for the Disney brand? Realizing the immense popularity of the blue alien, Disney has allowed Stitch to take over Mickey Mouse’s usual role for its 30-city Disney Holiday Magic Tour. This program travels to 30 different cities and helps children in need get presents for the holiday season. The Holiday Magic Tour opened on Broadway during an Aladdin performance and has even made a stop here in Detroit. With a sequel already announced, there’s no telling how far the blue alien and his Earthling family will go.
