While fans of Beastars and Trigun might have to wait some time to see how their series unravel, Studio Orange has been keeping busy with their latest Netflix original series, Leviathan, an anime that blends their distinct style with Western storytelling.
Leviathan is an adaptation of the YA novel series of the same name by Scott Westerfeld. The anime was first announced at Anime Expo in 2024, to be produced by Qubic Pictures, the same studio behind the Netflix series Eden, with Studio Orange animating.
Gizmodo journalist Isaiah Colbert recently interviewed with Orange producer Yoshihiro Watanabe, along with Qubic Pictures’ Justin Leach and Kat Minett, where they discussed the significance of this collaboration, how the original book’s cultural intrigue and distinct aesthetic made it an interesting challenge, as well as the amount of time and effort went into bringing Westerfeld’s books to life.
The synopsis for the Leviathan anime is as follows:
Set in a war-torn reimagining of 1914, Leviathan follows Alek, a fugitive prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Deryn Sharp, a daring young girl disguised as a boy to serve in the British Air Service. When fate throws them together aboard the HMS Leviathan, a massive, living airship made from genetically engineered creatures, they embark on a world-changing adventure that will challenge everything they know about war, loyalty, and identity.
Leviathan is now streaming on Netflix.
