The progress of Superman at the box office has been a relief for Warner Bros. Discovery (even if that company will no longer exist in the near future) as the film has earned over 220 million dollars worldwide.
David Zaslav has been ecstatic at the news, affirming that Superman is just the first step in DC getting itself back into films, while Wall Street rewarded the success with a 2.4% jump in the stock share price from July 11th to the 14th.
The film was also received very well by audiences despite last-minute outrage in some quarters because of the film’s messaging regarding various topics like immigration and global conflicts. These more negative opinions have seemingly been drowned out by a much more positive tide of reviews, with the film landing at an A- CinemaScore.
But there is still work to be done. With the film costing as much as 350 million due to a 225 million budget plus marketing, and the overseas numbers achieving just under 100 million so far, the film needs to hold strong and post consistently good numbers before and even after the next summer blockbuster, Fantastic Four: First Steps, hits theatres in the coming weeks. The two will likely share theatres for a while, and the performance of both will be closely watched by many, both within and outside of the industry.
