Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, passed away at the age of 54. He was vacationing in Costa Rica with his family and drowned while swimming. Warner considered The Cosby Show a legacy even if it was tarnished by Bill Cosby’s being accused of sexual assault. In 2023, Warner assured People that they are still proud of the show.

He said, “Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I'm still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture.” Warner’s career continued with the 90s sitcom Malcom & Eddie and as Reed in Reed Between the Lines. His more recent roles include Chuck Cooper in Major Crimes, Julius Rowe in Suits, AJ Austin in The Resident, and appearances on 9-1-1 and Alert: Missing Persons Unit

Outside of his acting career, Warner made waves in the podcasting world. Warner and his co-hosts Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley launched the podcast Not All Hood. The podcast was a vehicle to talk about mental health in the black community. Warner shared that the podcast allowed him a safe place to be vulnerable. He explained the purpose of the podcast, “When we talk about the Black community, we tend to speak of it as a monolith when the reality is there are so many different facets of the Black community, and we wanted to have a space where we can really explore, discuss, and acknowledge all of those different aspects.”

Warner is survived by his wife and young daughter, whose names have been withheld to keep their identities private.
