Superman continues to soar across the box office, bringing a much needed win for DC Studios. While this was not the first project released under the new DCU reboot, it is the first live-action project and the first Superman solo movie since 2013’s Man of Steel. In ten days, Superman has already surpassed Man of Steel’s lifetime run of $291M with the new movie sitting at $406M with the weekend’s box office numbers. It has remained a hit here at home, but the international audiences have taken less of an interest. This sluggish take off overseas may become even slower as another iconic title is set to release its reboot this weekend.

Marvel’s first family is returning to screens for the first time since 2015’s Fant4stic. The movie was a critical and commercial failure for Fox, leading to the shelving of the franchise until Marvel reacquired the rights following the Disney/Fox merger. This new take, starring Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, will act almost as a standalone from the rest of the MCU as it takes place in an alternate universe. This will allow audiences to submerge themselves into the new movie, without the baggage of any required knowledge of the numerous previous films of the MCU. The Hollywood Reporter is currently projecting the movie to make $130-$140M in its opening weekend, placing it slightly above the $125M opening weekend of Superman.

For the first time in a long time, Marvel and DC are at a competitive equal. Marvel has seen slowing profits for their movies since the end of the Infinity Saga and the beginning of the Multiverse Saga. Kevin Feige himself admitted that this was likely due to an increase in quantity over quality. DC, on the other hand, is entering a new stage of life and shedding their past of mixed reception from the DCEU. How these titans of industry will face off in the future is yet to be seen, but it is certainly a new age for comic book movies. Superman is currently playing in theaters, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released on July 25th, 2025.
