After already securing success with its opening weekend at the box office, Lilo & Stitch has become the first film of the Motion Picture Association to cross $1 billion this year. With $416.2 million domestically, and $584.8 million internationally, Walt Disney Studios’ latest has become the number one MPA release of the year in both markets.
This latest adds to the records that Lilo & Stitch has already achieved. Opening on Memorial Day weekend in the US, the film had the largest Memorial Day debut in history with its $183 million gross in four days. This year, it is one of only two films surpassing $400 million domestically. It has also become the highest-grossing film of the year in many international markets.
Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, Alan Bergman, said of the news, “We knew there was a lot of love for Lilo & Stitch with audiences around the world, yet we never take that for granted, and we’re proud of how this new film has connected with people. I’m thankful to our filmmakers, our cast, and all of our Studio team who have made this film such a success, and we look forward to more adventures with these characters ahead.”
Adventures with Lilo, Stitch, and the others of the cast are already in development. Late last month, Disney announced that a sequel had now entered production. If the sequel proves just as successful as the first, further projects could be greenlit.
