June 26 could be considered a Lilo & Stitch day, what with Stitch’s experiment number being 626. And so it was on that day that Disney decided to announce that a sequel to the recent live-action remake is now in development.

Shared on Disney social media channels, the short video announcing Lilo & Stitch 2 shows Stitch driving around the Walt Disney Studios in his pink toy car, passing by Stage 2, and giggling as he drives off to spell out the movie's name through skid marks on the asphalt.

The announcement of a sequel does make sense. Lilo & Stitch, which released Memorial Day weekend, made $183 million at the box office on that opening weekend. Since that time, the box office figures have risen to almost $400 million domestically, with the worldwide figures pushing that to over $900 million. At present, Lilo & Stitch is Disney’s most successful film at the box office this year.

While all that is known about the sequel is that development has started, it makes sense for the cast members, such as Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong – the other two of the Pelekai ‘ohana, to return. It will be fun to see what mischief Stitch lands himself in with this new adventure.
