After a disappointing performance at the box office with their live-action Snow White, Disney is cashing in on the success of the live-action Lilo & Stitch. The film was released over Memorial Day weekend, bringing it $183 million during that weekend alone. Lilo & Stitch has since exceeded $400 million at the global box office. It’s unclear what made this film such a success, except that the original Lilo & Stitch is a major part of millennials and Generation Z’s childhood, while the original Snow White was decades old by the time most of them were born. According to The Hollywood Reporter, non-families made up 57% of the movie’s opening weekend audience.
At this rate, Lilo & Stitch has caught up and is pacing slightly ahead of A Minecraft Movie, another box office blockbuster, but it’s not all good news for Disney. Their latest Marvel movie, Thunderbolts*, has only earned $360 million at the global box office despite being in theaters for a full month. With its box office success, Lilo & Stitch has broken a few records, including Top Memorial Day Opening of All Time, beating out Top Gun: Maverick, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and X-Men: The Last Stand. It also holds the record for Second-Biggest Opening Ever For Any Four-Day Holiday, Third-Biggest Opening Ever for Any Disney Live-Action Reimagining, Fifth-Biggest Monday of All Time Domestically, Second-Best Domestic Opening of the Year So Far, Biggest Disney Live-Action Opening Ever Across Latin America, and Seventh-Best Opening of All Time for Any PG Title.
