EA has been cancelling projects and reducing its staff over the last few months. Alongside the latest cuts, which see developer Cliffhanger Games shuttered, an email explains the focus of EA going forward as a way of explaining the cuts.

With the closure of Cliffhanger Games, the Black Panther project they were working on has been cancelled. This is in line with EA’s new focus, as explained by EA Entertainment president Laura Miele. The company will “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” Those opportunities include Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends.

The move toward a core set of franchises is in line with CEO Andrew Wilson’s words of last year, where he stated EA would be “moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry.” Despite this, Miele has said that both the Iron Man project of Motive and the third Star Wars Jedi game of Respawn will continue to be developed. Despite also cutting staff from its mobile operations, those will also continue to be developed.

Since its announcement in 2023, little has been known of the Black Panther project. Job listings stated it to be a single-player, action-adventure, open-world game. Developer Cliffhanger Games was formed in 2023, with key developers of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor joining the team. Meant to be the second game of a three-game deal between EA and Marvel, it has been said that Motive will now lead the future of that deal.
