The 'Game Of Thrones' Play Did Not Have An Easy Opening

Bet you didn’t know the Game of Thrones franchise had a major theatre production in the works! CultureSlate didn’t realize this either, but it is true, in yet another example of a successful franchise moving from the small screen to the stage for exploring important elements of their universe.
Yet in this case, the biggest piece of news so far for Game of Thrones: The Mad King is how rough of an opening it had. Finally previewed in late July, this was a performance delayed from its original preview date at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. While the recent preview supposedly had strongly positive audience reactions, per a local source, the cancellations of both the original preview and another a few days later meant the project clearly had to iron out some last-minute difficulties, though exactly what those were is unclear. In their statement about the delays, the Royal Shakespeare Company highlighted “the ambitious and epic nature of this production” as the principal reason for pushing back the play’s performance.
Hopefully, going forward, the play sees smooth sailing, and fans of the franchise, be it on the small screen or in the books, if not both, can enjoy The Mad King. Exploring the lead-up to, and events of, Robert’s Rebellion, the play is planned to begin a public run starting September 5th, 2026, and depending on how involved G.R.R. Martin was, may contain some critical new information in events previously only seen through biased and incomplete retellings.
