That’s the plan, at least. Craig Mazin, showrunner of HBO’s The Last of Us, based on the PlayStation series, has confirmed that the studio has been planning for a four season run, saying there’s "no way" the narrative can be finished in three. This comes after discussions in 2023 about the series length, Mazin was on record saying that the show, “could end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we're telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more.” It seems like he is doubling down on four seasons.
The Last of Us is currently in the tail end of season 2, with only one more episode to go. In an interview with Collider, Mazin has already spoken a bit about season 3, saying that it might be longer, “just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different... but certainly, there's no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we'll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That's the most likely outcome.” If any readers are excited for the future of The Last of Us, this may be perfect news.
