When it was announced that Rwandan actor Ncuti Gatwa was announced as the next Doctor in the long-running UK science fiction series, Doctor Who, he broke another barrier for the long-running series, specifically becoming the first black Doctor. Recently, Gatwa publicly confirmed that he is queer, breaking yet another barrier for the show. Gatwa also currently stars in the Netflix original series, Sex Education, where he plays an open and confident gay teenager. There have long been rumors about his sexuality and an assumption that he was not straight, however, he has been reluctant to publicly provide a lot of details about his personal life or sexual orientation. In June of this year, he told British Vogue:

“It’s a safety and mental health thing. After Sex Education, we all became public property, to an extent. You have to fight for your right to privacy after that, but you also do feel like you owe people something. In setting my boundaries, I knew I wanted to separate the private and public, and that I never wanted my personal life to overshadow my work. I also believe that everyone is on their own journey, and it’s important that no one feels an obligation to others in relation to what’s happening to them internally. And that’s what Sex Education is about: taking things at your own pace.”

In July 2022, actor Neil Patrick Harris, who will have a starring role in Doctor Who next season, confirmed to the Variety Just for Variety podcast that the actor (Gatwa) playing the next Doctor is also gay, which he stated was “super cool”. During an interview with Elle UK, Gatwa discussed an experience he had with a Rwandan woman at a Manchester UK Pride event:

“I had never met another queer Rwandan person before,’ he said. ‘I thought I was the only one in the world.”

Gatwa also recounted his experiences of being shy around and attracted to his Barbie co-star, Ryan Gosling:

“I was so nervous I hardly spoke for the first month [on set],’ he recalled. “There was a time when I was talking to Greta [Gerwig], and I turned around, and Ryan Gosling was looking at me, and his eyes were so blue that I just… fell over. I just drowned in his eyes.”

The next season of Doctor Who, introducing Gatwa, will premiere this fall.  The fourth and final season of Sex Education, also featuring Gatwa, will premiere on Netflix on September 21st.
