'The Mandalorian And Grogu' Amongst Films Qualifying For California Tax Credits

Tax season and a new season of films are underway as the new year springs. Among the roster of upcoming films will be that of The Mandalorian and Grogu, who shot into notoriety through their respective central roles in The Mandalorian. Premiering in 2019, The Mandalorian became one of Lucasfilm’s most memorable additions to the Star Wars universe, along with Grogu. With both The Mandalorian and Grogu’s star power, Lucasfilm is expecting the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu film to qualify for roughly $61 million from “2024 production tax incentives” through California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program, according to Variety.

Due to the large budget, the Mandalorian film has acquired, its production qualifies the film project and 15 others for substantial taxes. For the Mandalorian film alone, Variety states how Lucasfilm “distributes $330 million annually in state tax credits to TV and film productions”. The California Film Commission (CFC) $166 million in spending in California.

The fifteen films have generated jobs for “an estimated 2,252 crew members, 598 cast members, and 16,800 background performers poised to work across a combined 579 filming days.” Among the fifteen films, independent and funded by powerhouses, each one continues the tradition of being an “enduring attraction for storytellers”. Colleen Bell, CFC’s Executive Director recalls how the “enduring attraction” of California and filmmakers “not only infuse millions into [California’s] economy but also showcase our state’s talent and versatility.”

As The Mandalorian and Grogu begin production, they and the rest of the fifteen films will enjoy the California Tax Credit, which expanded to $330 million annually in 2014. With such an investment The Mandalorian and Grogu will get in return for filming in California, the film will be a memorable addition to the Lucasfilm saga.
